Mine Sweeper Game - Did You Know?

  • The term mine, referring to an automated stationary explosive, comes from medieval siegecraft. The attacking army would dig mines - that is, tunnels - under fortress walls in order to collapse them. As techniques advanced, these mines were filled with explosives to hasten the job.

  • The first naval mines were used during the U.S. Civil War.

  • During World War II, mines sank more than 1000 ships.

  • Naval mines were originally detonated by contact with a ship's hull. Modern mines are detonated by a ship's magnetic field, by its sound waves, or by the change in pressure caused by an approaching ship.

  • In order to avoid triggering magnetic mines, modern minesweeping ships are made with wooden or fiberglass hulls.

Game Rules

Each minefield (the grid of gray squares) contains a number of mines and a number of safe squares. The larger the minefield, the more mines it will contain. Also, the larger the minefield the longer the time limit.

Start by clicking on any square to reveal an initial group of safe squares. Each safe square contains a number which indicates how many mines are next to that square (including diagonally). This number can range from 1 to 8. A safe square with no number at all has no mines next to it.

Using the revealed numbers, calculate which spaces are safe to click on - that is, which spaces can't possibly contain a mine - and click on them to reveal more numbers. Also, calculate which spaces contain a mine, and flag them.

Don't guess unless you don't have a safe move! Avoid all the mines, and eventually every space on the board will be either revealed or flagged, and you'll have successfully cleared the minefield!

If there are NO safe moves, and you do have to guess, and you click on a mine, we'll give you a green "safe flag". It's just part of our effort to ensure that WorldWinner.com games reward skill and not luck.

However, if you click on a mine, you'll sink your ship and end the game. Also, the game will end if time runs out before you clear the minefield.

Game Controls

Click on any square to reveal it. If the clicked-on square is not next to any mines, this will also reveal adjoining squares.

Right-click on any square to mark it with a flag, indicating that you believe it to contain a mine. Right-click it again to mark it with a question mark, indicating that you're not sure. Right-click it a third time to remove the question mark. Note that any space marked with a flag cannot be clicked on; you must right-click it to change it to a question mark if you decide it doesn't contain a mine, and want to reveal it.

If you have flagged all mines that are next to a numbered square, right-clicking that numbered square will reveal all other adjoining squares.

To prevent cheating, Mine Sweeper cannot be paused.

Game Strategy

Look for recognizable patterns that indicate definitively safe squares or definitely mined squares. For example, look for a "3" along a straight row of unrevealed tiles; all three adjacent unrevealed squares must contain a mine.

If a numbered square has all its adjacent mines flagged, use your right mouse button to click on the numbered square to quickly reveal all adjacent unmined squares.

If you're stuck in one part of the grid, go work on another part of the grid; you might eventually reveal more squares in the area where you were stuck.

You can never lose the game by guessing when there's no safe move to make. But if there's a single safe move - where a non-mine square can be identified with 100% certainty - then you might click on a mine if you guess!
