In order to offer tournament games with a cash entry fee and a cash prize, performance is based on a player’s skill level and not elements of luck and randomness.

A typical skill game tournament will take between one to three minutes.  While an online casino game as Blackjack may only take thirty seconds, a single tournament may have as many as twenty players participating within the same time period. 

So, in a sense, Skill Games also provide more entertainment value because they provide more games per hour.

Think of it this way, you and a friend go in to a video arcade and play a video game.  You each have to plug 25 cents into the machine.  That is your entrance fee and goes to cover the cost of running the tournament, software, and so forth. You then each place a side bet of $1.00.  This $2.00 amount is called the Prize Pool.  Then you play the game and the person with the highest score wins the $2.00.

When you are playing skill games, you are playing against other people and battling their skill sets.  Games are designed so that all the chance has been taken out, and the following skills are needed to win.

Another great example is playing golf in a tournament where there is a prize for the best golfer.  In this tournament, there are four players who have a specific time to finish the game.  You pay your entrance fee / green fees and play 18 holes.   Sometime during the course of the allotted time, the other contestants play their 18 holes, and when all have finished, the winner is announced.

This is how skill tournaments work on the Internet for games like Solitaire or Collapse.  You don’t actually have to play head-to-head in real time.  All you are trying to do is get the highest score for the tournament that you signed up for.
